Safety Gear For Motorcycle Riding

By Thomas Fryd

Before you decide to take to the road on your Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha or Ducati, you should really consider the purchase of a number of items of protection. It is extremely risky to ride your motorcycle without at least some type of protection for your eyes and face. Riders without face shields risk having their view obstructed because of the insects or other debris that inevitably come up from the road surface. Added to this, the driving rain, wind dust and dirt can make a ride very unpleasant without protection.

There are plenty of types of shields and helmets available for purchase these days. You can choose from a wide range of styles, colors and designs, whether it be for an adult or a junior rider. A better choice for the protection of the entire face is a helmet with a plastic face shield as it will protect the whole face. For motorcycles with a built in windshield, a pair of goggles will offer sufficient protection.

Any eye protection that you choose should afford a clear view on both sides, so ensure that the goggles or glasses you choose have this. They should also be scratch resistant and shatterproof and should seal properly to prevent wind causing your eyes to water. If you choose full face protection, make sure that it has a strong chin support and a liner that will absorb any moisture. Keep in mind the following brands when you are making your choice.

Scorpion

Scorpion offer some of the best designed helmets in the world and they have a reputation for being trendsetters. Scorpion helmets are chosen by motorcycle riders from all corners of the globe. These helmets have a number of safety features including the "EverClear" anti-fog face shield, which also has a scratch resistant coating and a "KwickWick" liner that absorbs excess moisture, together with cheek pads for comfort. These liners are breathable and washable, which is an added bonus.

Nolan

Nolan helmets are another brand that offer the best in head and face protection, with the "Lexan" face shield that has a UV protection rating of 400. It also has the "Vision Protection System", or VPS. This is a clear shield that has three adjustable positions and an extra neck roll or support which will reduce noise from wind or road. For people who have allergic reactions to some products, the Nolan range offers an interior that has hypoallergenic sanitation.

Vega

These are very fashionable helmets and they come in nine face shield colors and sizes. There is a full faced option that will give you many safety features. The Vega is an extremely well made helmet and it has superior venting in the chin, rear and top of the helmet.

Sizes

Adult sizes range from XS through to XXL and junior sizes in S,M and L. The size of hat you wear will give you an indication of the size of helmet you will require. An example of this is if you wear a size 7-5/8 to 7-3/4 in a hat, you will need to choose an XL helmet.

Additional Motorcycle Protection

Safety glasses are additional items for motorcyle riders that offer protection, in addition to helmets. These items have passed the osha standards. The company Fulmer have full-face, open face, half face and off-road helmets from which to choose and AGV are a well-known brand used by many professional biker riders in tournaments. They have both clear and tinted visors that offer safety as well as fashion. - 16752
