U.S. versus Foreign Visitor Health Insurance

By Ray Sondeo

The United States has a much more advanced visitors insurance system than many other countries. The companies and the policies themselves offer relevant benefits that Americans expect in a health insurance policy.

Most companies that offer visitor health insurance policies in the U.S. are long-serving. Many are ranked by a letter system that is primarily based upon their financial viability. Foreign insurance companies are not typically ranked in this manner and their length of incorporation is difficult to determine. Some US providers lack familiarity with foreign insurance policies.

American visitors insurance policies are connected to a PPO network. PPO is a preferred provider organization, and it is a network of contract hospitals, doctors and providers. This network allows providers to be billed directly. In other countries, insurance companies may promise that the insurance policy will be accepted everywhere. Whether or not hospitals and doctors choose to accept it is another matter entirely. Without accountability, one takes a risk with foreign insurance companies.

Most American doctor's offices request an insurance card upon a patient being admitted. Visitors medical insurance companies will generally provide this though foreign policies will not necessarily provide it. Without this card, many American doctors will refuse the policy; not wanting to bill overseas.

Customers also have the choice of a 'fixed rate' or 'comprehensive' plan through American insurance companies. Foreign companies enforce strict age restrictions, and may refuse to cover anyone over the age of 70. The lack of legal regulation of insurance companies overseas prevents transparency and equitable coverages.

Grievances may be filed with insurance regulatory committees in the U.S. when an American insurance company does not pay claims appropriately. These committees do not exist for regulation purposes abroad.

The attractiveness of insurance for visitors should not be weighed solely by price. Though it is a consideration, but the better levels of service provided by U.S. providers makes it a case of getting what one paid for.

Obviously visitor insurance is an essential part of traveling. Differences between American company and foreign company offerings should be examined closely. U.S. companies will typically offer better services and guarantees of payment; this type of security is difficult to find in foreign insurance policies. - 16752
